Writer's Block: Idiomatic Confusion

[Error: unknown template qotd]The concept of 'every other'. Like in elementary math class (where the drama all began) when they instruct you to 'color in every other square'. Who decided what that meant? Do you color in the first square and skip the next? Do you skip the first square and color in all the rest? Is there some cosmic definition of 'every other' out there that I just somehow missed, because I still don't get it.
