Memes: They're stupid, sometimes dangerous, but ultimately unstoppable.
In short, I love them.
But here's a bewilderingly awesome example of how memes can benefit mankind, despite themselves.

Pictured is a genuine Chinese beggar who was nicknamed Brother Sharp, because of his good looks, apparent fashion sense, and penetrating eyes.
Someone snapped a picture of him one day and posted them, and Brother Sharp was an overnight celebrity. People began going to his city, Ningbo, in search of him. They snapped pictures with him, gave him some money (which he used to buy cigarettes), and increased his fame.
Now, this would normally be a meme of extremely questionable taste, as this man has been found to be mentally unstable and was very distressed by all of the attention. People and officials would badger and insist that he go to a shelter, because of his unwanted presence in the streets, which would scare and upset him.
But the media circus did one thing that is straight out of amnesia!fic. Brother Sharp's younger brother saw him on the news and realized that this man was his long-lost brother, with whom he had lost contact with in 1999. Family had been searching for him ever since, but to no avail. The brother contacted the officials, and Brother Sharp was checked into a mental hospital, where his brother came to bring him home.
Guys. By the power of the Internet, this man was genuinely helped. 4chan actually has power to do great good as well as great weirdness. Mind blown.
But my little black heart can't help but notice that, yep, the Brother Sharp meme was pretty cool, too.
